How to Apply for the State Exam for Reciprocity Applicants

A request for an Inactive license renewal allows the licensee to maintain licensure status, but the licensee is not allowed to work as a nursing home administrator while in the Inactive status. In addition to finding a preceptor, applicants are required to submit their fingerprint images for a criminal history review by filling out the Request for Live Scan form and taking it into a live scan vendor. If an applicant does not live in California, they can send a completed fingerprint card along with an application and we will submit it to the Department of Justice.

A letter from the proposed preceptor to the Board requesting that they be approved as the preceptor. The preceptor must be a Massachusetts licensed administrator in good standing with at least 5 years of Nursing Home Administration experience. The preceptor will work with the applicant to develop a 1,000-hour training outline based on a pre-training assessment of the applicant's education and work experience. When your AIT program has been completed and approved by the Board, you will be notified by letter of the procedure for taking the licensure examination. The Nursing Home Administrator Program will no longer include the $49 fingerprinting fee in the listed fee for an AIT program or for the Initial application package for Reciprocity or Master's applicants. The preceptor can make minor program changes to the AIT program (e.g., small changes to the training hours per week, outline changes, etc.). However, major changes to the AIT program must first be approved by the NHAP prior to the change taking effect (e.g., 10 hour per week change or more, Preceptor and/or facility changes, etc.). Have ten years of full-time hospital administration experience in an acute care hospital with at least 60 semester units of college or university courses.
